When he’s not touring the world, this Grammy-award-winning singer and blues piano player from the UK plays most Tuesdays in the Mid-City neighborhood at Chickie Wah Wah on Canal Street, a venue known for letting artists set and keep the cover charge at the door. Cleary works with a killer band, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, but his star turn at Chickie Wah Wah is just his bad funky self on piano. His deeply soulful vocals, songwriting skills and spot on musicianship have made Cleary a respected peer of such R&B legends as Dr. John and the late great Allen Toussaint, who did much of the arranging on Cleary’s Grammy-winning 2016 album Gogo Juice on FHQ Records. This club attracts a slightly older crowd of music lovers, a welcome change for the over 40 set.
