Visit a washateria music shrine

The average passerby wouldn’t think twice about the ho-hum washateria at 838-840 North Rampart Street on the edge of the French Quarter. But a plaque outside The Clothes Spin and a display of historic photos inside reveals that between 1945 and 1957 this was the site of J&M Music Shop run by Cosimo Matassa, the penultimate shaper of the New Orleans R&B sound and some say the Godfather of rock ‘n’ roll. A music producer and studio owner until he died in 2014, Matassa recorded some 250 singles and 21 gold records here, including Tutti Frutti by Little Richard, Sea Cruise by Frankie Ford, Aaron Neville’s Tell It Like It Is and so many more.
